Strengthening Gender Responsive Wash Intervention in Humanitarian Response

Since December 2023, Jago Nari Unnayon Sangstha (JNUS), with technical support from the BRAC Pooled Fund funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and Global Affairs Canada (GAC), has been implementing a WASH intervention named “Inclusive WASH services for the displaced population in the Rohingya camps of Cox’s Bazar” in Camp 3.
The project currently serves 24,674 Rohingya individuals from 5,048 households across Blocks A, B, C, and D with the objective of ensuring improved access to safe water, sanitation, solid waste management and hygiene services.

Promotion of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment

JNUS, implementing Means to Lead project in collaboration with SKUS and support from UN Women, is implementing the Multi-Purpose Women Centers (MPWCs) initiative to promote gender equality and empower women and girls in both the Rohingya refugee and host communities across Ukhiya and Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

Jago Nari Unnayon Sangstha (JNUS) and JICA funded the Fisheries Livelihood Enhancement Project (FiLEP), working together to improve the capacity building of the project participants. The gender training component under FiLEP will be implemented to strengthen awareness and equitable participation among beneficiaries engaged in tilapia and seaweed culture, seafood technology, and dry fish production, together with their family members. Each training will be delivered over two days, allowing participants to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical insights.

Improving the protective environment for self-reliance of affected populations across the Myanmar displacement axis

Jago Nari Unnayon Sanstha (JNUS) is proud to announce a strategic partnership with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) under the DANIDA Multi-year Strategic Partnership. As part of this initiative, JNUS will lead the administration of three livelihood training centers in Cox’s Bazar, focusing on creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for Rohingya women. This collaboration reinforces our commitment to empowering women in humanitarian settings and fostering long-term resilience through skill development and economic inclusion. We look forward to working together to drive meaningful change for displaced and conflict-affected communities.

Advancing Protection and Policy through Advocacy

JNUS actively advances the rights and protection of vulnerable groups through national dialogues on Technology-Facilitated GBV (TFGBV), stakeholder engagement meetings, divisional-level policy dialogues, and video documentaries on land and tenure rights of ethnic minority communities. As a key member of the local Women, Peace and Security (WPS) platform, JNUS also collaborates with partners to promote peace, social cohesion, and women’s leadership in Cox’s Bazar by conducting capacity-building sessions, advocacy dialogues, community discussions, and awareness rallies that strengthen inclusive, gender-responsive peacebuilding.

Strengthening the Efforts of Young Women Leaders Forum (YWLF) for Addressing GBV in Bangladesh

JNUS, in partnership with Feminist Opportunities Now and Crea is strengthening the Young Women Leaders Forum (YWLF) in Bangladesh to combat gender-based violence. The initiative expands this network of emerging women leaders, enhances their leadership capacities, and equips them with the skills needed to drive transformative change. It also fosters collaboration with women’s rights organizations and women-led groups across three divisional headquarters and Cox’s Bazar, including refugee women-led organizations, creating a broader and more unified movement for gender justice.

Empowering Women-led Civil Society Organizations to Enhance Climate Justice

JNUS, in collaboration with the Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) and with support from UN Women, has been leading the EMPOWER initiative to strengthen multi-stakeholder efforts and advance climate justice in the Cox’s Bazar region of Bangladesh.

Social Cohesion Between Host and Rohingya Communities

JNUS’s project, ‘Women in Building Social Cohesion in Cox’s Bazar,’ empowers influential women from host communities to initiate discussions and dialogues with women in Rohingya refugee camps. These women receive leadership and life skills training and then pass on these skills to other women in both communities through group discussions. The project also engages them with various stakeholders, including youth and community leaders, to foster cohesion. Thirteen forums have been formed, with seven in refugee camps and the rest in the host community.

Enhancing Protection to Female Volunteers and Staff in the Humanitarian Response in Cox’s Bazar

JNUS has been conducting a research to understand the trends in safety and security of female staff and volunteers. The report and the guideline are awaiting to be published.

Empowerment of Women in Fishing Community in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh for Increasing their Rights in Livelihood

JNUS, funded by the DFATD , has been implementing this project to protect rights in livelihood among the women in fishing community in Cox’s Bazar. Under this project, JNUS will support 200 women in 10 groups to strengthen their livelihood against the impact of climate change.

Capacitating Local NGOs in Cox’s Bazar

JNUS, as a member organization of START Network, has been undergoing a due diligence process to enhance the capacity of the organization. The Start Network provided two seed funds and mentoring support to increase the capacity of JNUS.

Provision of critical multi-sectoral support services in Rohingya and affected Host Community

Implement:-

JNUS implemented a multifaceted project to promote Localization, Gender Mainstreaming, Social Cohesion, and Disability Inclusion. Empowering women, promoting gender equality, and fostering social cohesion were key goals. The project also focuses on disability inclusion and aimed to strengthen the community to enhance gender equality, and promote social harmony.

MAITREE: Promoting women’s participation in peace building and social cohesion

Organization:- Funded by UN WOMEN Supported by Ain o Salish kendra (ASK)

Women leaders from the host community and Rohingya Refugee Camps were empowered to undertake efforts to boost women’s involvement in peace-building and social cohesion initiatives. Trained on gender-based violence (GBV) and paralegal roles, they acted as ‘Maitree Apa’ in both communities. Their primary mission was to foster communication, collaboration, and cooperation among women leaders from both communities, aiming to cultivate mutual understanding and trust.

SHEBA Project

Implement:-

This project, implemented by JNUS, aimed to strengthen the protection of vulnerable women and girls in both refugee camps and the host community. JNUS offered a range of services, including support, referrals, mediation, and legal aid to address Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The project actively engaged with local administration and community leaders to prevent and respond to GBV. It also empowered survivors and activists among women affected by violence, extended services to adolescent girls, boys, women, and men in both host and refugee populations. Notably, the project activated fifty Self Help Groups (SHGs) to combat violence and discrimination against women and girls.

Strengthening Intercommunity Engagement against Violent Extremism

Implement:-

The initiative formed in 2019 engages civil society, women leaders, religious figures, and teachers to foster social harmony in Ramu Upazila, Cox’s Bazar. Proactively combating extremism, the group organized intra and inter-community dialogues and consultations. Leveraging their extensive social networks and influential capacities, the project significantly contributed to the establishment of peace and stability within the community.

Local Women Lead for Sustainable Peace

Organization:- Funded by GNWP

Duration:- January 2020 – June 2022

Implement:-

JNUS, in collaboration with GNWP, empowered young women leaders in Cox’s Bazar to promote literacy, social cohesion, leadership, and economic empowerment. They actively advocated for gender equality and women’s rights locally, conducting literacy classes and planning dialogues with key stakeholders on women, peace, and security.

COVID-19 Response in Rohingya Camps and Adjacent Host Communities in Bangladesh Project

Organization:- Funded by DEC Supported by Action Aid Bangladesh (AAB)

Duration:- September 2020 – February 2021

Implement:-

The six-month project by JNUS aimed to improve knowledge and understanding of personal protection and good hygiene behaviors. It successfully installed 60 handwashing facilities, distributed 12,000 masks, and offered mental health and counseling services to address COVID-19-related psychological trauma. Local journalists and JNUS youth ambassadors were trained to promote COVID-19 prevention through community journalism and social media.

2021-069 UN OCHA Inter-Agency Humanitarian Evaluation on COVID-19 Response

JNUS partnered with Ited Ltd., a UK-based consultancy firm, to facilitate the collection of primary data in both host communities in Ukhiya and Teknaf, as well as in all 37 Rohingya Refugee Camps where WFP conducted interventions. The data collection involved 68 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and 100 peer-to-peer surveys. JNUS collaborated closely with the Itad Ltd. evaluation team to support WFP’s strategic evaluation in Bangladesh.

Capacity Development for “Advancing Local Level Action in EiE” project.

JNUS, in partnership with Street Child, UK, implemented this project to empower National and Local NGOs to develop concept note, project proposal, project management and M&E. Two sets of training had been organized to build capacity of the thirty local organizations.

Empowering CSOs, Youth, and Women for Transparent and Accountable Bangladesh (ECTAB)

Implement:-

JNUS implemented a project entitled “Empowering CSOs, Youth, and Women for Transparent and Accountable Bangladesh (ECTAB)” in partnership with ARTICLE 19 in Cox’s Bazar till December 2022. The goal of this project was to enhance the capacity and confidence of selected CBOs and grassroots organizations in using the Right to Information (RTI) Act as a tool to ensure the public availability of information and support activists and human rights defenders.

PRISE (SDC BRAC Social Cohesion Fund for Cox’s Bazar District (T-2)

JNUS, in association with BRAC, implemented a project entitled PRISE (Partnership Reinforcement for Integrated Skills Enhancement) from June 2022 to March 2023 funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) at two unions of Ramu Upazilla in Cox’s Bazar Bangladesh. The objective of the project was to provide skills development training on Mobile Phone Servicing (MPS), IT Support Services, Tailoring and Dress Making (TDM), and Wood Furniture among drop out students (14-18 ages), Divorcee (18-20 ages) and Persons with Disability (14-20 ages) and ensure their job placement. In this project, JNUS set up two training centers at two unions of Ramu and provided training to 100 learners of the above mentioned category. After receiving training, job placement had been ensured for most of the learners and few of them became self-employed.

Improving Access to Emergency Health and Primary Health Care Services of the Displaced Rohingya Communities who are Suffering due to Devastating Fire in Kutupalong Camp, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar

This project was designed to provide primary health care services to the Rohingya individuals who had endured massive loss or injured due to a devastating fire on 5 March 2003 at Camp 11 of Ukhiya Upazilla in Cox’s Bazar. The primary health care services had been provided through establishing a satellite clinic, which included medical consultations to the victims of fire, distribution of medicine for the treatment of common ailments such as headache, fever, gastric, skin diseases, allergy, asthma, nutrition kits, Anti-natal Care (ANC) and Post-natal Care (PNC) support for pregnant women, psychosocial counseling to the victims of burns and injuries and referring of the patients to other medical facilities available around Camp 11 in Kutupalong camps. Finally, this project reached to 600 Rohingya individuals through medical consultations and distribution of medicines, 500 women and adolescent girls with hygiene to improve their menstrual health by providing hygiene kits and 150 pregnant women offering nutrition supplements to address their conditions of malnutrition.
